MEET THE MAKERS - KAREN CURTIS

May 25, 2017

Karen is a ceramic artist and has a studio pod that she creates and makes beautiful cups, vases and jewellery from. She also runs workshops for 1-1, groups, children and adults and can do commission work.

She is a really valued member of our community, bubbly, supportive, loves a giggle, numerous cups of tea and a gif. Let's find out more.

Background

"I have an MA and BA in Ceramics and have worked as a community artist as a hobby for 20 years working in and out of the Housing Sector. I was awarded funding in 2016  which enabled me to make a new body of work. Sadly in the first month of starting out my father was diagnosed with cancer and I found working from home on my own really difficult.

Studio life

I have been good friends with Julia and Sarah for nine years and knowing they were setting up the studio I asked if they had space for me to rent a pod. I needed somewhere to work with other people that were like minded and in the same boat.

I felt at home when I moved in to the studio and love having my friends around me and really enjoy making new friends with the other pod people. We all chat and have lunch together and I get lots of help, advice and feedback on my work.

Sum up the studio

Space, friendship, community, atmosphere.

Would you recommend TSS?

I would most definitely recommend the studio to others, it's fab. If you want to run your own creative business and looking for a community of co workers to share life, ideas, lunch, friendship and laughter the TSS is for you!

The second floor is a really exciting development and will enable more people to enjoy and experience the community.

I love being here. If I hadn't moved in I think I would have had to give up because working on my own was too lonely".
