We have moved!!

support our Crowdfunder

Hello! We're The Sustainable Studio - an independent, creative, community-based studio in Cardiff. We have moved to a new location and need your help transforming our ground-floor into a community space for workshops, events, gigs, exhibitions and more!

Your support will make all the difference!

The New Space

We've been given an incredible opportunity by Cardiff Council to take on the former Transport Club on Tudor Street in Cardiff. We aim to raise £25K through both this crowdfunding campaign and applying for funding pots to help convert the space into an accessible community space on the ground floor of our new premises, including a grassroots music venue, exhibition space, a music studio, and an area for community workshops. We are so excited that you are here for the next stage of our journey. We will update the money raised daily, so keep checking in to see how we are doing.

Crowdfunding Target £25k

What is it all about?

We have had an incredible seven years at our current Warehouse, contributing to the creative communities thriving in our City. With your help raising £10k six years ago, we transformed the 2nd floor of the Warehouse into an event space and affordable studios.

Cardiff is rapidly transforming through various development sites in the City Centre. Since our building was sold five years ago, we have continued to search for a suitable building to move to, and now we believe we have found it.

  • It was 2015 when we first went to view the derelict Warehouse on Curran Road. The warehouse was a Former munitions factory in the war and went on to become a radiator factory and then an engineering site. Over the last ten years, many businesses have operated out of the space.

Friends and family thought we were a little crazy starting on such a massive project as we had never done anything like it before, but we believed it was possible and had strong ambitions to create a platform for grassroots creatives.

It was completely derelict and in disrepair initially, but we had a strong vision to see it transformed into a light and inspiring place to work with a community of like-minded people.

  • A small team of three (Julia, Sarah, and Eja) and our incredible members work hard to support and nurture each other. There is a creative community of 28 members from all ages and all walks of life. Over the last seven years, we have seen over 200 members call TSS their home and have had over 15000 people through our doors since opening in July 2016.

Over the years, we have provided affordable studio space, learning opportunities through internships and work experience, creative workshops, exhibitions, markets and events.

Social inclusion has been our primary objective by supporting people to develop creative and professional skills, gain confidence and help people into education and employment.

We're proud of what we've built and are grateful for the support from the local community.

  • Cardiff Council have been an incredible support to us over the years and finally came up trumps when they offered The Transport Club as a possible venue for us to move into in January 2023.

The Club was used throughout Covid as a support hub for vulnerable adults and hasn’t been without issues regarding the building works required to get it up to scratch.

Despite starting to reuse all of the materials from our current site to build the studios, this is the first time we have ever had ground floor space. We are excited about the opportunities available for the community once it is open.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

As you can see from the pictures above, we could do with some help with the ground floor! There is a way to go before we can open up to the public, and we are crossing everything to get it all ready before the year is out. The biggest challenge we face is making the ground floor completely accessible.

We will put in an accessible toilet, level the bowling alley floor, and install a ramp down to a venue space at the back of the building. Other works include fireboarding the ceiling in the front room and removing false ceilings in the bowling alley and back lounge to create a light and airy space for workshops, exhibitions, live performances and more.

Once these works are done, we will lay new floors, paint the walls and bar, and install new lighting in all three rooms to accommodate exhibitions, workshops and performances. If we raise more, we will put it towards purchasing a new PA system for the venue.
